Parallel to our Fincher series and general film pieces, Frame Work has decided to undertake a longer form look at video games and RPGs in particular.  We begin with a prequel of sorts, examining the genesis and lasting, sneakily huge impacts of the grandaddy of role-playing games in all forms, Dungeons & Dragons.   

We have a grand old time discussing the oddball marriage of pure unfettered imagination and rigid, statistical game mechanics, its relation to theater and computer nerdery, how intellectual property litigation shapes all our lives, the signature D20 dice-rolling system as a tool for understanding white privilege, and all kinds of other stuff.

John and I examine the baffling plot, indefensible runtime, and general affability of WW84, with detours into exploring the definition of nitpicking and a pitch for a bold new direction for the DCEU.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD PODCAST

 

John and I have made it to the end of the QT canon, with the weird, shockingly violent but overwhelmingly wistful Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.  We will do one more to try to put some sort of capper on this whole ramshackle affair, but for now just chill out, have three or four whiskey sours, and do all the rating/reviewing/subscribing you can, okay friends?

LOVECRAFT COUNTRY PODCAST

 

We have a new podcast live where I go into a bit more depth on my previous Lovecraft Country post about how it's horror premise was undercut by odd structural decisions and the earnestness of its empowerment narrative.  It also ranges wider into the difficulties of doing horror in a serialized TV format, and different ways to skin that particular cat.

The guys welcome Chris Pernell to parse the underpinnings of the American Western, whether Michael Madsen is actually good,  truth and lies, Tarantino's age-blindness, Netflix's clumsy editing,  and arguably the most provocative and least coherent ending of QT's career.

GAME OF THRONES PODCAST(S)

 

John and I took a departure from our Tarantino series to talk about Schwartzblog's favorite topic, Game Of Thrones. 

It is split into two parts, the first generally attempting to dissect the various trends in entertainment that conspired to make the HBO series the biggest thing in the world for nearly a decade, and second looking at the ending and attendant audience disappointment that it wrought.

John and Al welcome Jesse Perry to talk about Tarantino's sloppiest piece of provocation, DJANGO UNCHAINED.  They talk at great length about the film's great length, speculate on different iterations the movie could have taken, manage to avoid saying the N-Word, even once!

This may not be our masterpiece, but it sure is Tarantino's.

Topics of conversation include Cristoph Waltz’s all-timer Nazi villain, the film’s crazy ‘five interrogations’ structure, what is achieved through Brad Pitt’s accent, other cinematic Nazis Tarantino may have taken his cues from, the ability of Mike Myers to disappear into a role, and lots more besides.

Our podcast on QT's half of the ill-fated GRINDHOUSE experiment is live.  And furthermore, we are now up on the Apple Podcasts and the iTunes Store, with Spotify and Google Podcast streams should be up within the next few days.  Just be sure to search for Frame Work, which is the new name we concocted so John and I can continue yapping when we run out of Tarantino movies in a few weeks.

JACKIE BROWN PODCAST

 

We tuned up some of our audio issues for the installment on the most forgotten of the proper Tarantino films, JACKIE BROWN.  We discuss the effects of aging, heists, adaptation Sam Jackson (of course), and proper etiquette for prank calling Robert De Niro.

JACKIE BROWN is a great crime movie, and even if you don't like the podcast or Tarantino generally you should check it out.
